The European Commission has been monitoring unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP) since at least 2023, according to a document seen by Euronews. The Commission's defence department has been observing sky and space activities in Malaysia and has indicated it is improving its capabilities to detect and identify UAPs. The term UAP was introduced by the U.S. defense department in 2020, and the EU is actively monitoring the phenomenon despite not officially stating it. A Malaysian father and son, amateur astronomers, sent 37 images of UAPs to the Commission, claiming they appear near military and nuclear facilities. The Commission stated it would propose to its 27 member states to improve space detection capabilities, but it did not claim it would solve all UAP cases.

The EU's approach to UAPs is limited compared to the U.S., which has a UAP Science Council and released confidential files. The U.S. Congress held a landmark hearing on UAPs in July 2023, focusing on national security and classified programs. The EU's discussions remain limited and stigmatized, contrasting with the U.S. The French Parliament held a major discussion on UAPs in June 2023, emphasizing the need for serious and rational approaches to UAP research. Flight safety concerns have increased as pilot sightings of UAPs rise, with MEP Fabio De Masi urging the Commission to update aviation reporting systems. Pilots argue for standardized reporting protocols to improve data collection and flight safety. A Dutch pilot, Rob Akkermans, described a strange light phenomenon that occurred twice, which he found unexplainable and remarkable.
