The Varginha Incident (1996): Brazil's Roswell

On the afternoon of January 20, 1996, sisters Liliane and Valquíria Silva, 16 and 14, and their friend Kátia Xavier, 22, were walking through the Jardim Andere district of Varginha, a city in Minas Gerais, when they saw a creature crouched against a wall in a vacant lot: brown, oily-looking skin, large red eyes, three bumps on its head, and a smell of ammonia. It looked at them and they ran. Their mother went back to the lot and found nothing, and the story was in the local paper the next day.

Within days Varginha was full of stories: that firefighters had captured a creature that morning and handed it to the army; that a second was taken alive and died at a hospital; that a young military policeman who had handled one, Marco Eli Chereze, died of a sudden infection weeks later, which his family attributed to the encounter; that a zoo animal died mysteriously. The Brazilian Army said its vehicles in town that day were on routine business and that the "creature" the girls saw was a mentally disabled local man known as Mudinho, crouching in the rain.

Brazilian researchers, chiefly Ubirajara Rodrigues and Vitório Pacaccini, collected dozens of witness statements over the following years, including from people who said they had seen creatures in military custody. The army's 2010 report stood by the Mudinho explanation. In 2022 James Fox's documentary Moment of Contact brought the witnesses, now middle-aged, to an international audience and added claims of a military recovery, none of it documented.

Varginha has embraced the case: the city's water tower is shaped like a flying saucer and the sighting is part of its identity. The event has the full Roswell structure, a crash-retrieval rumor, a military presence, a mundane official explanation, and witnesses who never recanted, compressed into a single week in a small city. It is the best-known Latin American case and the one most likely to be raised whenever the subject reaches Brazil's congress.
